The Use of Stem Cuttings with Different Diameters on the Yield of Gama Umami Elephant Grass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Gama Umami)
ABSTRACT. This research aims to determine the effect of using different stem cutting diameters on the yield of Gama Umami elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Gama Umami) as seen from the dry weight of leaves and stems, the dry weight of shoots and roots, leaves/stems dry weight ratio, and shoot/roots dry weight ratio. The method used in this research is an experimental method arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 3 treatments and six replications. The treatments were different stem cutting diameter sizes, including D1:1-1,2 cm (small diameter), D2:1,3-1,8 cm (medium diameter), and D3:1,9-2,2 cm (large diameter). The variables observed included the dry weight of leaves and stems, the dry weight of shoots and roots, the leaves/stems dry weight ratio, and the shoots/roots dry weight ratio. The result showed that different stem diameters had a significant effect (P<0,05) on the dry weight of leaves, stems, shoots and roots, with the highest mean value in D1 (small diameter) compared to D3 (large diameter) treatment. It was concluded that plants with smaller stem diameters provided higher production yields. Early growth of the plant greatly influences the yields.
