Constructing Environmental Ethics in Islam: A Contemporary Sufism Approach Based on Qur'anic Texts

Abstract


This study aims to construct a coherent model of Islamic environmental ethics through an integrative synthesis between the normative explication of authoritative texts (the Qur'an) and the cosmological-ethical framework of contemporary Sufism. Employing a constructive qualitative approach with a philosophical design, this research applies thematic analysis (tafsīr mawḍūʻī) to the sacred texts and conceptual-hermeneutical analysis to the Sufi tradition, subsequently synthesized through triangulation logic. The research findings yield a Triangulation-Based Model of Islamic Environmental Ethics, a holistic framework standing on three pillars: textual authority (naṣṣ), Sufi spirituality (rūḥāniyyah), and contemporary ethical rationality (ʻaql ʻamalī). This model encompasses six integrated ethical principles: Unity and Sacredness; Balance and Justice; Responsibility as Trusteeship (Amānah); Simplicity and Sufficiency; Prohibition of Destruction; and Contemplation and Compassion.This synthesis successfully overcomes the dichotomy between the legal-formal approach of fiqh and the abstract nature of Sufism, while simultaneously offering a transformative spiritual foundation for responding to the ecological crisis. The study concludes that solutions to the environmental crisis necessitate a spiritual reorientation to restore the sacred relationship between humanity and nature, and recommends this model as an operational framework for value-based education, policy, and conservation movements within Muslim communities.
