Focus and Scope
The journals scope is about islamic law. In particular: Islamic Family Law, Islamic Economic Law, Islamic Constitutional Law, Islamic Criminal Law, and other Islamic Law.

Peer Review Process
The submitted manuscript is first reviewed by an editor. It will be evaluated in the office, whether it is suitable for our focus and scope or has a major methodological flaw. This manuscript will be sent to at least two anonymous reviewers (Double-Blind Review). Reviewers' comments are then sent to the corresponding author for necessary actions and responses. The suggested decision will be evaluated in an editorial board meeting. Afterwards, the editor will send the final decision to the corresponding author.
Publication Frequency
Published 2 (two) times a year in June, and December. Each issue contains 9 articles, both conceptual articles and research articles. Hukum Islam is published in Indonesian, but an English text is also accepted.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
Archiving
This journal utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration. More...
Publication Ethic
Hukum Islam : Journal for Islamic Law is a peer-reviewed journal, published twice a year by Sharia and Law Faculty of Sultan Syarif Kasim State Islamic University of Riau. It is available online as open access sources as well as in print. This statement clarifies ethical behaviour of all parties involved in the act of publishing an article in this journal, including the author, the editor-in-chief, the Editorial Board, the reviewer, and the publisher. This statement is based on COPE’s Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors.
Ethical Guideline for Journal Publication
The publication of an article in Hukum Islam : Journal for Islamic Law is an essential building block in the development of a coherent and respected network of knowledge. It is a direct reflection of the quality of the work of the authors and the institutions that support them. Peer-reviewed articles support and embody the scientific methods. It is therefore important to agree upon standards of expected ethical behavior for all parties involved in the act of publishing: the author, the editor, the reviewer, the publisher, and the society. As the publisher of Hukum Islam : Journal for Islamic Law is, Sharia and Law Faculty takes its duties of guardianship over all stages of publishing seriously and it recognizes its ethical and other responsibilities. Sharia and Law Faculty committed to ensuring that advertising, reprint or other commercial revenue has no impact or influence on editorial decisions.
Publication Decisions
The editors of Hukum Islam : Journal for Islamic Law is responsible for deciding which articles submitted to the journal should be published. The validation of the work in question and its importance to researchers and readers must always drive such decisions. The editors may be guided by the policies of the journal's editorial board and constrained by such legal requirements as shall then be in force regarding libel, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. The editors may confer with other editors or reviewers in making their decisions.
Plagiarism Screening
It is basically author’s duty to only submit a manuscript that is free from plagiarism and academically malpractices. The editor, however, double checks each article before its publication. The first step is to check plagiarism against offline database developed by Al-Jami’ah Research Centre and, secondly, against as much as possible online databases.
Fair PlayAn editor at any time evaluates manuscripts for their intellectual content without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy of the authors.
Confidentiality
The editors and any editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.
Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest
Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in editors' own research without the express written consent of the author.
Duties of Reviewers
Contribution to Editorial Decisions
Peer review assists the editors in making editorial decisions and through the editorial communications with the authors may also assist the author in improving the quality of the paper.
Promptness
Any selected referee who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its prompt review will be impossible should notify the editors and excuse himself from the review process.
Confidentiality
Any manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be shown to or discussed with others except as authorized by the editor.
Standards of Objectivity
Reviews should be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Referees should express their views clearly with supporting arguments.
Acknowledgement of Sources
Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. Any statement that an observation, derivation, or argument had been previously reported should be accompanied by a proper citation. A reviewer should also call to the editors' attention any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge.
Disclosure and Conflict of Interest
Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships with any of the authors, companies, or institutions related to the papers.
Review Process
Every manuscript submitted to Hukum Islam: Journal for Islamic Law is independently reviewed by at least two reviewers in the form of "double-blind review". Decision for publication, amendment, or rejection is based upon their reports/recommendation. In certain cases, the editor may submit an article for review to another, third reviewer before making a decision, if necessary.
Duties of Authors
Reporting Standards
Authors of reports of original research should present an accurate account of the work performed as well as an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data should be represented accurately in the paper. A paper should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behaviour and are unacceptable.
Originality and Plagiarism
The authors should ensure that they have written entirely original works, and if the authors have used the work and/or words of others that this has been appropriately cited or quoted.
Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publication
An author should not in general publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable.
Acknowledgement of Sources
Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must always be given. Authors should cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work.
Authorship of the Paper
Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported research. All those who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors. Where there are others who have participated in certain substantive aspects of the research project, they should be acknowledged or listed as contributors. The corresponding author should ensure that all appropriate co-authors and no inappropriate co-authors are included on the paper, and that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the paper and have agreed to its submission for publication.
Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest
All authors should disclose in their manuscript any financial or other substantive conflict of interest that might be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed.
Fundamental errors in Published Works
When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, it is the author’s obligation to promptly notify the journal editor or publisher and cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the paper.

Plagiarism Screening
Plagiarism screening will be conducted by Hukum Islam Journal Editorial Board using Turnitin app..
- Plagiarism and self-plagiarism are not allowed;
- The authors should ensure that they have written entirely original works, and if the authors have used the work and/or words of others that this has been appropriately cited or quoted;
- An author should not in general publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable;
- Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must always be given. Authors should cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work.
Working Process:
- Editorial Team checking manuscript on offline and online database manually (checking proper citation and quotation);
- Editorial Team checking manuscript by using Turnitin app. If it is found plagiarism indication (more than 25%), the board will reject the manuscript immediately.
AI Tool Policy
For Authors
Starting from 2025, on Vol 25 Issue 2, the use or non-use of AI-tools must be stated in the article.
If authors do not use AI-tools at all, please state that “This article is the original work of the author without using AI-tools for writing sentences and/or creating/editing tables and figures in this manuscript”.
Note:
Faculty Sharia Universitas Islam Negeri Sultan SYarif Kasim Riau (Publisher) strictly prohibits the use of generative AI or AI-tools to generate sentences/image creation/image modification in any form;
The use of AI-tools to draw insights from data as part of the research process, not to produce the sentences, tables, and figures in the article, is allowed;
AI-tools must not be authors or co-authors, or cited as authors.
If authors use AI-tools, please state for what purpose the AI-tools are used and what the name of the AI-tools used are. The followings are the common uses of AI-tools to help authors:
Checking the grammar use in the manuscript (Grammarly, Hemingway App, Linguix, Reverso, etc.);
Improving coherence and cohesiveness to get better readability and understandability of readers (website-based AI Tools, e.g. ChatGPT, Copy AI, Prosa.ai, Revoicer, QuillBot AI, etc.)
Hereby, authors have to mention the tool’s name and state that they have rechecked the accuracy and correctness of the data and language used and have consulted English language expert for validation and verification (state the name of the expert or the institution). The checking process must be carried out manually as AI generally produces sentences that sound over confident and authoritative, and change meaning that can be incorrect, incomplete, or biased. However, authors are ultimately responsible and accountable for the whole content of the article.
*Example statement: “The grammatical structure of this article was improved by using ChatGPT and the authors have rechecked the accuracy and correctness of the generated sentences with the topic and data of this study. The data and language use in this article have been validated and verified by an English language expert and none of the AI-generated sentences includes in this article".
For Reviewers
It is strictly prohibited to use AI-Tools for review as the information provided by AI-tools may not be in accordance with the article context, incomplete, or biased;
The manuscript sent to reviewers must not be uploaded into AI-tools as the documents sent are confidential, may violate the authors’ property rights. If the data or information contain personal identification, it may violate data privacy rights.
For Editors
The manuscript submitted by the authors is confidential. Thus, the editor must not upload the manuscript to AI-tools. This may violate the rights of authors’ property and data privacy;
The prohibition on uploading documents to AI-tools also applies to notification letters or emails from authors, including for language translation purposes;
Editors must not use AI-tools in the article evaluation process or manuscript decision-making as it may lead to incorrect, incomplete, or biased conclusions of the manuscript;
The editor is responsible for the editorial process, decision-making, and communication with authors.
Reviewer Guidelines
- The background of the study;
- State of the art, relevant research to justify the novelty of the manuscript;
- Gap analysis, novelty statement;
- Hypothesis or problem statement (optional);
- Approach to resolve the problem; and
- The aim of the study.
- The method is written clearly, so then other researchers can replicate the experiment or research with the same result;
- Not only describe the definition of terms but also describe how to conduct the research;
- Describe the location, participant, research instrument, and data analysis;
- The data presented has been processed (not raw data) into a table or figure and given a supportive description which easy to follow.
- The result related to the original questions or objectives outlined in the Introduction section.
- The author describes the result of the study consistent with what other investigators have reported or there any differences.
- The author provides interpretation scientifically for each of the results or findings presented.
- The author describes the implications of the research.
- The author describes the limitations of the research or drawbacks to the method or position.
- The author describes further needs/areas for research or expansion of ideas.
- Answer the objectives of the research;
- Implication or recommendation (optional);
- Written in a paragraph, not in bullet/numbering.
Advertising
Hukum Islam sets high ethical standards in all its activities and, above all, defends the right to editorial independence. It does not allow advertising or sponsorship to influence the decisions made on editorial content.
Readers understand that advertising is different from editorial material. They know that the claims made in advertising are not endorsed by Hukum Islam.
Hukum Islam will carry advertisements that are legal and decent and conform to current recommendations and guidelines.
Decisions on the positioning of advertisements are made independently of decisions made in the editorial department on the content of a specific issue.
Editorial material will not be influenced by advertising. Hukum Islam does not publish material to accompany advertising and does not sell advertising concerning particular articles.
All decisions are at the discretion of the editor. If commercial clients adhere to these guidelines, then their advertisement or sponsorship is likely to be accepted. Occasionally, decisions may take time
