In this article, the formulation of the problem raised is the problem of renewal in Islam in Indonesia. The method used is a library approach, the primary data source for this research is the book History of Islamic Civilization by Syamruddin Nasution while secondary data is obtained from writings that are related to the theme of this research, the collection technique used is heuristic by searching for written data and the analysis techniques used is a historical technique, namely the analysis of history by interpreting historical data. The results obtained are that there are internal and external problems. Renewal of thought in Islam in Indonesia occurred based on the Muslim community's awareness of the decline and backwardness of the currently developing civilization. Like Western civilization which continues to experience progress in the fields of science, military power, technology and information. This progress made Muslims aware that they were far behind and it was time to rise again with progress in various fields as previously achieved by Muslims themselves. The spirit of renewal gave birth to reform figures who each had their own characteristics of thought. Some of the reforms carried out were the establishment of educational institutions, with the aim of developing science. Democratic politics, rationalism and nationalism. And creating a safe and comfortable atmosphere for humanity in Indonesia with the concept of modernism including the ideas of Moderate Islam and Wasathiyah Islam.
